It sounds like the long-gestating TRON 3 may take longer still before it finally rolls into production: here’s the latest update.
There was a whopping 28 year gap between 1982’s TRON and its eventual sequel, 2010’s TRON: Legacy. The latter film would pick up story threads from the first, reintroduce original characters a generation later and generally set the rules for a glut of ‘legacy sequels’ to follow. Even the film’s pioneering use of digital de-ageing is now a staple feature of such films.
As it stands, we’re hoping we don’t have to wait another 28 years for a follow up to Legacy but who knows? It’s almost 12 years since the Joseph Konsinski-directed film hit cinemas and whilst there’s been plenty of noise about a third film, nothing has ever materialised. A direct follow-up to Legacy died on the vine when the film failed to clear more than $400m at the box-office and Disney suddenly found itself with newer and shiner toys to play with in the form of the Marvel and Star Wars franchises.
Updates on the project have been fairly thin over the last couple of years, although we did look at the possibilities for potential sequels the last time meaningful news broke and you can read that here.
However, the possibility of a third film introducing a character played by Jared Leto has lingered and the actor himself has popped up to give a brief update, stating that “I’m a super fan of TRON, and we are working hard on TRON with our incredible partners at Disney. Just an amazing group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.”
It’s certainly not much of an update, but it does at least suggest that plans for a third film are being actively developed. Whether Leto’s ability to draw box office numbers in the upcoming Morbius will have any effect on a TRON sequel will be interesting to see. Following the stunning success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, there’s never been a better time to release a Spider-Man companion film, with cinematic interest in the character and the multiverse concept (which Morbius looks set to embrace) at an all time high.
Should Morbius do huge numbers, it might push Disney into a decision regarding TRON, but of course, the opposite could prove to be the case as well. We’ll let you know as we hear more.
