James Gunn addresses rumours regarding the Man of Steel’s fate, in turn creating even more rumours about the future of DC films.
James Gunn, one half of the new creative team at DC Studios, has taken to Twitter to address the rumours swirling around the fate of Superman in the new look DC Universe.
Historically, it’s fair to say that Superman is not a character that has been at the forefront of anybody’s plans in the DCEU (as it’s known to its chums). It’s been almost a decade since said film and TV universe was formed but in that time we’ve only had one solo film featuring the character and that was Zack Snyder’s
Man Of Steel, that kicked off the DCEU as we know it all the way back in 2013.
It finally looked like things might be moving forwards for Henry Cavill’s take on the character, with rumours suggesting that a sequel was actively in the works. Things progressed to the point that Cavill himself recently announced his return as the character, but all of this was blown into uncertainty when it was reported that Patty Jenkins’
Wonder Woman 3 was being cancelled by DC Studios last week (with the story being that Jenkins elected to walk away from the project). With that film gone, the future of all legacy ‘Snyder-verse’ characters suddenly looks very shaky and once more, nothing seems certain.
The whole story is unfolding in the public domain, including something akin to a live blog by James Gunn as he keeps jumping on social media to offer vague assurances and hints at the future of the DCEU.
In his latest tweet, Gunn responded to a fan concerned that Superman would continue to be ignored in the DCEU by stating ‘Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.’
Things got a bit testier when one Twitter user claimed to have insider knowledge that Gunn is not a fan of Henry Cavill’s take on the character, stating that he ‘does not like Henry Cavill’. Gunn got a little personal in his reply, stating: ‘”So weird. You seemed so plugged in! Anyway, I just had forty people reach out to me to say you just got kicked out of your Mom’s basement. So sorry, man.”
All concerns about Superman aside, we’re not sure if Gunn’s regular sojourns onto Twitter are helping the situation. Obviously, until an official DCEU roadmap is released, the creator can only offer half-baked assurances or enigmatic comments, neither of which will cause the rumour mill to stop turning. If anything, Gunn’s input is having the opposite effect and throwing fuel onto the fire, and that’s without even mentioning that getting into testy spats with Twitter users might not be the best look for the head of a major division of Warner Bros.
This is a story that is set to rumble on until we hear something official, and whilst nobody can stop leaked reports from emerging, the way the studio is choosing to publicly respond continues to create both intrigue and headlines.
