Jake Gyllenhaal versus vampires in a classic Stephen King story? Take our money already: more on the new Salem’s Lot here.
Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot is a great take on the modern vampire story, but not one that’s seen a true cinematic adaptation. King’s body of work has been adapted over 50 times, with Salem’s Lot getting two forays onto the smaller screen, once as a TV movie and once as a mini-series. Third time’s the charm for its cinema hopes though, with the news that Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in the new big screen adaptation of King’s second novel.
New Line Cinema acquired the rights to the project back in 2019 with James Wan producing. Gary Dauberman, who has scribed Annabelle and IT is set to write and direct, whilst Christopher Waltz is rumoured for the role of Straker, the enigmatic antagonist in the film. With the production set to get underway in September, we’d expect to hear casting confirmed soon and if Gyllenhaal should be confirmed in the lead role, the Nightcrawler and Brokeback Mountain star should elevate King’s material further.
We’ll bring you more casting news on Salem’s Lot as we hear it. The project could be aiming to be the most impressive of the latest wave of King adaptations (although Edgar Wright’s planned adaptation of The Running Man may put that to the test…).
