Hit US sitcoms It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Abbot Elementary have announced a crossover episode

An It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Abbot Elementary crossover? It appears to be happening, with word of the two hit sitcoms joining forces emerging in recent days.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a crossover episode between the two shows has been filmed, with writer and star Rob McElhenney confirming the news via a photo of the casts together on Twitter/X with the caption “Oh. Hello”.

Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson previously teased the crossover at Comic Con in July, saying, “We will be doing an interesting crossover this season … but I’m not going to tell you with who or with what or where or when or how. But it’s really exciting, and I think it’ll change television as we know it.”

Given its humble beginnings as a low budget show with an unknown cast, the fact that It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is still on the air but, more importantly, is still pushing boundaries and is very funny, is testament to the skill of writers and stars Rob McElhenney (later of Welcome To Wrexham fame), Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton.

The show follows the misadventures of The Gang – Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Kaitlin Olson as Sweet Dee and Danny DeVito as Dee and Dennis’ father Frank – who ostensibly work at Irish pub called Paddy’s. Their nihilism and cynicism puts Larry David to shame; they’re some of the most genuinely awful people ever seen on television.

It has also remained remarkably consistent in quality, with The Gang’s recent trip to Ireland being a highlight – Howerton trying not to cough during a meeting because he doesn’t want the person to know he has Covid really has to be seen to be believed. Series 17 is currently in production.

Separately, Abbot Elementary was created by Quinta Brunson in 2021. It’s a mockumentary which follows optimistic second grade teacher Janine Teagues as she battles with chronic underfunding at the titular school. The cast also includes Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, William Stanford Davis and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The series has garnered critical acclaim throughout its run, being nominated for 24 Emmy Awards and winning four.

The crossover will air as part of Abbot Elementary’s fourth series, which begins on the 9th October, you can watch the show on Disney+. All episodes of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia are available to stream on Netflix
