Idris Elba and John Cena, fresh from the upcoming reinvention of The Suicide Squad, will be joining up up for more action hijinks it appears.
Amazon Studios has moved quickly to snap up
Heads Of State, an action thriller that will re-team
The Suicide Squad stars Idris Elba and John Cena for what
Deadline is describing as a ‘90s style two-hander.’
Although James Gunn’s reinvention of the DC comic book property
The Suicide Squad has yet to release, all concerned were apparently impressed with the on-screen chemistry of Elba and Cena and as such, a project was quickly put together by The Safran Company (who is also creating
The Peacemaker, the TV series spin-off for John Cena’s character from
The Suicide Squad). That project, going by the name of
Heads Of State was in turn quickly picked up by Amazon.
Described as a bit of ‘
Air Force One meets
Hobbs And Shaw’ (in which Elba of course played the key antagonist) the film has been sold as a package, with screenwriter Harrison Query attached also.
Query has several other projects in the pipeline, including a Tom Hardy-led Navy SEALS film called
War Party but nothing that has yet to enter production.
Given the title, and the reference to
Air Force One, the much-loved 90s era Harrison Ford action movie, Iām going to take a punt at this and suggest that Elba and Fox will play the respective leaders of their nations, forging the āspecial relationshipā between the UK and US with explosions and quippy one-liners.
More on
Heads Of State as we hear it, including most likely, a better plot than that, further casting and a director announcement. Might a while yet for this one though.
