It looks as though Warner Bros and HBO Max will be putting fewer films in cinemas going forward – more details here.
Only weeks after Disney reshuffled its corporate structure to place a greater emphasis on channeling films through streaming platform Disney+, WarnerMedia has made similar changes with one of its major subsidiaries: the HBO Max service. Two key executives in charge of feature film production and acquisition have left the group and will not be replaced. Instead, the company’s structure has been reorganised with motion picture output being streamlined, with greater oversight by WarnerMedia, its parent company.
In reality, what this means is most likely that HBO Max’s autonomy to purchase and release films theatrically – as it did with the Seth Rogen film
An American Pickle – is somewhat reduced. What this means for theatrical releases of the platform’s homegrown movies, such as the upcoming
Let Them All Talk starring Meryl Streep, remains to be seen. But it looks like its parent company will have a greater say in making those calls too.
