HBO Max is coming to Europe (but not the UK yet)

Warner Bros confirms that it’s rolling out its HBO Max streaming service to Europe – but there’s still no sign of a UK debut. Warner Bros’ streaming service HBO Max has made no shortage of headlines these past 12 months, particularly when it found itself in the limelight due to a tactical shift. You might remember the one: where Warner Bros announced that all of its 2021 theatrical slate would go to the streaming service on the same day of their cinema release. Ultimately, it didn’t really affect us much in the UK, given that HBO Max was a US-only service. There were restrictions on Warner Bros launching the service over here given the pre-existing deals it had in place with broadcasters in the UK, notably Sky. But it’s certainly getting closer. Warner Bros has now announced that HBO Max is coming to Europe, and will launch on October 26^th. Only in six countries at first though, with Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Andorra, Norway and Spain chosen. The next plan will see the service rolled out to primarily Eastern Europe and Central Europe countries in 2022. Again, on the list, there’s no sign of the UK. Quite how tied up those Sky deals are remains to be seen, but it’s entirely feasible that we still won’t have HBO Max in the UK by the end of 2022. Things can change quickly, of course. Separately, Warner Bros has clarified that simultaneous cinema and streaming releases only apples to HBO Max in the US. Dune is the next high profile launch from the studio, and that’ll be cinema-only in Europe.
