Greta Gerwig has signed a deal with Netflix to write and direct two Chronicles Of Narnia films, here are the details.
C.S. Lewisā
Chronicles Of Narnia novels are a staple of British fantasy fiction, and have been adapted successfully to the screen multiple times. From a mostly lost ITV serial in 1967, to an animated show in 1979, the beloved BBC television series from 1988 to 1990 and three big budget blockbusters from 2005 to 2010. Still, three tales from the series ā
The Horse and His Boy, The Magician’s Nephew and
The Last Battle ā have thus far never been adapted for the screen.
With the release of
Barbie imminent, it has been confirmed that Greta Gerwig will write and direct “at least two” Narnia films for Netflix. The exact texts being adapted are not confirmed. Although it is likely to be the first two books in the series –
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and
Prince Caspian ā in chronological terms
The Horse and His Boy and
The Magician’s Nephew serve as prequels to the other books.
The streaming service snapped up the rights to the series after Walden Media let them lapse in 2018, and enlisted Coco co-writer Matthew Aldrich as the ācreative architectā to oversee the development of all films and shows adapted from C.S. Lewisā Narnia universe.
Where this leaves Gerwig’s involvement in the
recently discussed Barbie sequel is unclear, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
