Barbie director Greta Gerwig is being lined up to helm a brace of adaptations of CS Lewis’ beloved books, according to reports.
News outlets are abuzz this morning with reports that Geta Gerwig is being targeted by Netflix to helm two adaptations of
The Chronicles Of Narnia.
Originating from the site,
What’s On Netflix, the story may not have appeared via one of the major news outlets but nonetheless, it has been widely circulated and seems to have sparked high degree of interest.
Gerwig turned heads with her 2019 adaptation of
Little Women, employing a non-linear timeline and wonderful cast to great effect to create one of the year’s surprise successes. Naturally, a bigger project followed in the guise of
Barbie, a Margot Robbie-led take on the iconic Mattel toy line that is set to be one of the biggest films of next summer.
Given her career trajectory of late, it makes a lot of sense for Netflix to seek out Gerwig’s talents to shepherd its
Chronicles Of Narnia films through the opening phase. Gerwig’s growing reputation for finding interesting new angles when telling established stories will be crucial, especially if Netflix plans on adapting
The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, a story that has appeared on the screen several times already.
Coco co-writer Matthew Alrich was bought on by Netflix as a creative overseer when it acquired the rights to Lewis’ beloved series of novels back in 2018. Since then however, things have remained quiet.
Whilst it would be great to see Gerwig tackle the series, especially as Netflix now seem to be warming to theatrical releases, we’re also not sure w want to see the talented filmmaker shackle herself to a big studio franchise for the next five or six years of her career, taking her away from making smaller, more personal films such as
Ladybird or
Frances Ha.
The coming months will hopefully shed some light on the story, and we’ll see just what Netflix’s intentions are for
Narnia. In the meantime, if you haven’t yet seen
Little Women, do be sure to check it out.
