Greenland 2, starring Gerard Butler, is given bankruptcy protection

The sequel to Greenland will be called Greenland: Migration, but it’s just going through some financial hurdles on its way to the screen. Here’s an odd story, about a film that’s not even gone before the cameras yet. A sequel is pressing ahead to the Gerard Butler-headlined Greenland, a film that generated a fair bit of interest whilst the world was in the midst of lockdown. It’s a good movie too, and as such, in swooped STX to pick up the rights to Greenland 2 last year. Alongside that, though, STX itself is in the midst of being acquired by the Najafi Companies. And as that deal continues to go through, STX has moved to secure Greenland 2. It’s fairly common that each individual movie at a studio is given its own subsidiary company, so as to protect the parent company should the film in question not do very well. What looks to have happened is that a firm called FSO Jones LLC has been set up to house Greenland 2, and that on Monday, STX sought chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for FSO Jones LLC. This isn’t a case, to this tired writer’s eyes, of there being financial problems around the funding of the movie. Rather that it protects Greenland 2 from – according to Deadline – financial liabilities as its parent company moves to new owners. Lionsgate is said to be rivalling investment firm Najafi for STX, but it’s the latter that’s set to be successful. The next Greenland film is called Greenland: Migration, and as we hear more about it, we’ll let you know.
