Warner Bros reveals when we can expect to see its next monster mash-up, also giving us a glimpse of a beastly new challenger in Godzilla x Kong: New Empire.
When Godzilla vs. Kong released in 2021, it heralded the return of blockbuster movies into cinemas, following an unhappy period throughout the global pandemic where huge films had either been pushed back or occasionally just dumped onto streaming platforms.
Audiences were eager for big-screen spectacle and the film duly obliged. As the title suggested, the King of the Monsters went toe-to-toe with the mighty Kong and Warner Bros and its partners Legendary, took home a box office of nearly half a billion dollars.
With the release happening as the effects of the pandemic were still being felt, it makes it more difficult to get an exact read on where Warner Brosā franchise currently lies ahead of the release of the sequel, Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, set to release in just under a yearās time. Godzilla vs. Kong made more money than its predecessor, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters but not as much as the film before that, the rather fun Kong: Skull Island.
Was Godzilla vs. Kong's box office inflated by a surge of people just wanting to see a blockbuster after so long, or deflated somewhat in the wake of the pandemic? Warner Bros will be hoping it was the latter, rather than the numbers being a sign of a franchise in decline, especially given that the studio is doubling down on the franchise business since merging with Discovery last year. It certainly makes for an interesting situation as we look towards the release of Godzilla x Kong: New Empire in March, 2024.
Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs. Kong returns to direct, with Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle also back from prior entries, while Dan Stevens, Fala Chen, Alex Ferns, and Rachel House all set to feature. A brief teaser has been revealed which introduces a third antagonist that it looks like itās going to give Kong and Godzilla a hard time. You can catch that below.
