Don’t call it a comeback, but early numbers for worldwide cinema attendance are looking healthy indeed off the back of Godzilla Vs Kong.
The latest film in Legendary’s monster franchise, Godzilla Vs Kong, has released into cinemas internationally and considering that not all territories are yet open, the initial numbers for it are really quite impressive. They might just signal that after many months of missing big screen films, audiences around the world are keen to get back into cinemas.
Grossing a sizeable $128m from just 28 countries, the film’s total was helped by a haul of $70m from China alone, in just a three day stretch. Of course, these numbers are all relative, but when you compare the totals so far to the same figures for last year’s first big IMAX release post-lockdown, Tenet, Godzilla Vs Kong has more than doubled its take for the same opening period.
It’s promising news indeed, although the film’s US grosses will be significantly impacted by the film’s availability on the HBO Max streaming platform on the same day as its American release. This was part of a deal signed by Warner Bros, the film’s distributors, to drive subscriptions to its new service.
All told though, its positive news for cinemas in a year that’s been largely bereft of such stories. With more markets, including the UK set to open soon, its a promising sign for the future of big screen film. We’ll bring you more box office news as we hear it.
