Feel the magic, hear the roar, Thundercats are loose! Well, thatās the plan anyway, if a new movie project comes together.
The new movie Godzilla Vs Kong has gotten off to a great start with its worldwide cinematic release, making the kind of money that suggests the death of cinemas has been greatly exaggerated. Whilst that film continues to perform well globally, itās been announced that its director, Adam Wingard, has been tapped up to direct a big screen version of the enduringly-popular 1980s cartoon series, Thundercats.
The movie, which is planned to be a hybrid of CGI and animation, is based on the adventures of a group of feline humanoid warriors who are forced into exile as their planet, Thundera, is dying.
Speaking to Deadline, Wingard has been discussing his love for the source material, revealing he wrote a Thundercats screenplay in tenth grade.
The director also opened up about how the project came to fruition, stating āI’m in a place where Godzilla Vs Kong has gone well with Warner Bros. They love the movie, as we were wrapping it. I heard there was a ThunderCats script out there and it happened to be set up with some of my producers on Death Note. I asked them, I want to rewrite this script with my friend Simon Barrett. This is a huge passion thing for me. Nobody on this planet knows or has thought as much about ThunderCats as I have. They gave me the reins. I saw this as an opportunity to do a new type of fantasy sci-fi spectacle film that people have never seen before. It’s got a rich mythology; the characters are fantasticā.
Wingard has promised to keep the 80s aesthetic of the original show, promising āI donāt want it to look like Catsā (caveated by him insisting heās not looking to add a dig at that movie or its director).
Weāre certainly excited for this one. Thundercats is a project that was seemingly left behind whilst many of its other 1980s Saturday morning cartoon contemporaries graduated into full-blown movies years ago, such as Transformers and GI Joe.
With Godzilla Vs Kong getting good reviews too, it only heightens the excitement for fans of the original series that theyāll finally get the Thundercats film that theyāve craved for so long. Weāll bring you more news on this one as we hear it.
Only one way to end this story, thoughā¦
