Casting for the new Spy Kids film, due to be written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, has been announced.
We’ve known for a while now that the successful
Spy Kids franchise, which earned more than $550m worldwide across four films, is returning once more to our screens. Skydance Media struck a deal with Netflix early in 2021 that sealed the involvement of series’ creator, Robert Rodriguez, securing his services to write and direct.
Casting for the new entry into the franchise has been announced with
Shazam! star Zachary Levi leading the ensemble alongside
Last Known Position's Gina Rodriguez. The duo will be joined by Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterson who will play the titular
Spy Kids.
The new film in the series will mark the second family film that Rodriguez has directed for Netflix following 2020’s
We Can Be Heroes. The plot is set ‘after the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, leading them to become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.’
The streaming platform is commissioning a number of high-profile family-oriented movies lately, as it tries to convince audiences to stick with its service after losing subscribers for the first time in its history (and reportedly laying off more staff too). Whether
Spy Kids and other family-friendly projects such as
Slumberland,
Enola Holmes 2 and
The School For Good And Evil can help to arrest the company’s slide remains to be seen, but we’ll let you know more about
Spy Kids and those other projects as we hear it.
