Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot claims thereās another film on the way, according to reports ā itāll be part of James Gunn and Peter Safranās DCU.
Gal Gadotās take on Wonder Woman has been the subject of ongoing speculation for a while now. Whilst the heads of the new look DC film division, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are pressing the big red reboot button on the DC Extended Universe, itās looking like some elements of the existing continuity will be preserved.
Xolo Maridueñaās Blue Beetle is one such contender, with Gunn previously stating that the teen hero will be part of āa handful of charactersā to make the leap from the old continuity into the new. According to Gal Gadot, it now looks like her take on Wonder Woman may number among that small group too.
Speaking to
ComicBook.Com, Gadot said: “I love portraying Wonder Woman. It’s so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we’re gonna develop a
Wonder Woman 3 together.”
(If youāre wondering whether Gadotās interview could be considered as promoting a project, something off-limits since the actors went on strike, although her comments have just been published, they were reportedly recorded back in June before the actorās strike kicked in).
The current DCU slate doesnāt include a
Wonder Woman 3, but Gunn did say when revealing the schedule of films that more would be announced. At this stage, thereās no mention of Patty Jenkins returning to the directorās chair, despite helming both
Wonder Woman films ā the first of which remains as the best-reviewed DC film according to lots of review metrics.
Gal Gadot certainly inhabits the role and fans will likely be pleased to see her return, but we canāt help feeling that Gunn and Safran have missed a trick here. If thereās the potential for high-profile characters from the existing DCEU to carry over to the new continuity, why not use that dangling thread as a way to entice audiences into cinemas?
After all, one reason often cited for the dismal box office showings of
Shazam! Fury Of The Gods and
The Flash was that fans knew the current DCEU was coming to an end and therefore couldnāt be bothered to invest their time and cash into it. If it was teased that some charactersā fates might be extended, that could well have piqued the interest of moviegoers and helped to create greater interest in each film.
Maybe itās a lack of interest now the continuity is ending, perhaps itās just superhero fatigue in general, but DC is on a shocking run with
Blue Beetle up next and then
Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom coming in December. Warner Bros marketing execs will soon have to stop high-fiving over their
Barbie successes and figure out how to counter the growing apathy towards the expiring DCEU if they want to end the year on a high.
Despite potentially returning to lead the new DC continuity, even Gadot doesnāt seem fully invested in the current DC goings-on. Whilst she briefly mentions the new round of casting for major DC characters such as Superman in the interview, she freely admits that she doesnāt know who actually got the role (it was David Corenswet), saying: “I saw that they were testing, doing different screen tests, but I don’t know who got it, but it seemed like everyone was super legit and talented and, like, great. So I’m happy for them. It’s such a huge take-on, and it’s such an exciting beginning to any actor, and I wish whoever it’s going to be the best of luck and enjoy the ride.”
Weāll bring you more DCU news as we hear it.
