Fresh details emerge for Tom Cruise’s next project, set to shoot in space

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are still boldly going where Hollywood has never been before,  shooting part of their next movie in space. New details have emerged for Tom Cruise’s next project, once he’s wrapped up work on Mission: Impossible 8. Whilst it’s been a while since we heard anything regarding this particular film, it still very much appears to be in the pipeline. It seems that Tom Cruise is set to face his most implacable foe yet: the cold, unforgiving vastness of space. It was back in 2020 that Space Shuttle Almanac, the official Twitter account for all things space-related, confirmed that Cruise and director Doug Liman would be heading into space to shoot scenes for the as-yet unnamed movie in October of 2021. The project is the result of a collaborative effort between  NASA, billionaire Space X founder Elon Musk, along with Cruise/Liman and their production team. Whilst that date came and went, (and Russia sent a team of filmmakers to the International Space Station that same month, to make The Challenge, their own feature-length film in space), Cruise and company are still very much on terra firma. However, Variety is reporting that the project is still very much set to go ahead, with the space flight being led by Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria who holds several space-walking records with NASA. The voyage is  also still set to be aboard a Space X Crew Dragon Axiom Tourist Flight. Mission: Impossible franchise director Christopher McQuarrie is co-scripting the film, and like Cruise, he’s been a bit busy of late. It’s no surprise then, given all of the technical gremlins that also need to be figured out, that this one is taking it’s time to come together. Only part of the film is set to be shot in space, with plot details emerging to seemingly dispel the rumours from 2020 that the project could be Cruise and Liman reuniting for a sequel to Edge Of Tomorrow. In the movie, Cruise will play a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth.
