Director Bennett Miller is working on his first feature film since 2014’s Foxcatcher and it’ll focus on AI.
AI is a popular theme in today’s films. In fact, we’ve just written about the worrying undercurrent of it in Netflix’s Heart Of Stone. Other recent films such as Ex Machina, The Creator and M3GAN have also ruminated on the possibilities of AI on the big screen.
Another director to tackle the subject is Bennett Miller, the director of Capote, Moneyball and Foxcatcher. In fact, Miller hasn’t made a film since his 2014 Oscar-nominated Foxcatcher, which transformed Steve Carrell into troubled millionaire and wrestling enthusiast John E du Pont.
Miller recently told Config24 (via World Of Reel) that he’s developing a new film about AI, something that featured strongly at his art exhibition at Gagosian.
“Well, my next film … I don’t know how much I should say … A.I. is a major theme in it. It’s probably not what one would imagine. I don’t know why [A.I.] is not the number one headline on top of every website and news. Anyways, this is going be one aspect of the film […] I’m working with a writer right now,” Miller said.
Miller has also been developing a documentary about “how technology has altered our realities in ways we know and more terrifyingly, don’t yet know.” The project is currently stuck in post-production or “state of refrigeration” after lawyers got involved. Miller didn’t elaborate on what that meant.
Despite having only four feature films under his belt, Miller is without a doubt one of the most interesting voices in Hollywood. His work mostly tackles real people and narratives based on true stories so we’re intrigued to see what he does with the subject of AI. The project doesn’t have a title yet, at least one that Miller was keen on sharing, and it seems to still be early days, so we’re hoping that this one makes it to the big screen.
More on Miller’s next film as we hear it.
