There’s fast cars and fast talk abound in this first proper look at the upcoming film of the popular PlayStation driving simulator Gran Turismo.
Despite only officially entering production last November, the team behind this year’s Gran Turismo had already wrapped production by January ahead of what we imagine must be a pretty busy post-production window to get the film into a final cut ahead of its release in August of this year.
The project is being helmed by Neill Blomkamp and is surely one of the more interesting blockbuster swings of the last twelve months given just how quickly the whole thing has come together. The film was only announced last May, giving it just over a year to be completed ahead of that ambitious August 2023 release. Still, the movie is being backed by Sony’s PlayStation Productions division and with solid actioner Uncharted having done well and HBO show The Last Of Us having wowed audiences and critics alike, the studio has every reason to be confident.
The cast for this one looks like great fun with Djimon Hounsou, Geri Halliwell, Orlando Bloom and David Harbour featuring alongside Archie Madekwe, who had small parts in Midsommar and Voyagers. Madekwe will take the lead role in a wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player who ‘won a series of video game racing competitions before becoming an actual professional race car driver.’
There’s no doubt that this is the most ‘video gamey’ film from PlayStation productions yet, but it boasts some talent in front and behind the cameras. Plus, if anyone has a hope of making those racing sequences really sing,it has to be Neill Blomkamp whose blend of thumping live action and ‘invisible’ CGI has always been impressive since his debut feature, 2009’s District 9.
We’ll continue to bring you updates on this project as we hear them. Gran Turismo is expected to hit cinemas on August 11th this year.
