Emerald Fennell’s new film as director – following Promising Young Woman – will be arriving at the end of November: more here.
Amid all of the delays hitting mid-budget theatrical releases, Amazon Studios is pressing ahead with the release of Emerald Fennell’s hugely-anticipated next film, Saltburn. According to Screen Daily, the film will arrive via MGM in limited release on November 24 followed by a December 1 expansion.
That certainly flies in the face of the growing raft of delays, but Amazon seems to be fully committed to entering the theatrical market through its MGM brand. Given that it can also release the film on its Prime Video streaming platform immediately after (or during if it likes) the film’s theatrical run, the company is likely less perturbed by the thought of not being able to use the film’s stars to market it (because of the ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood).
As we saw with this year’s release of Air, Amazon isn’t afraid to shell out cash on a prestige production and use the theatrical release as a loss leader to ramp up the status of a film before it arrives on the company’s streaming platform. When that (in theory) presumably presumably helps to elevate streaming numbers, it also aids in retaining or growing subscribers or pushing push people towards buying loo roll or whatever the Amazon algorithm secretly does to our souls.
And make no mistake, Saltburn is a prestige release. Emerald Fennell’s reputation as a hugely-talented filmmaker was cemented by the hugely positive critical reaction to 2021’s Promising Young Woman and everybody is anticipating her follow-up film. Saltburn stars ‘Barry Keoghan as newly arrived Oxford University student struggling to fit in who gets drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.’
The comedy drama’s cast includes Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Archie Madekwe, and Alison Oliver. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
