Vocal opposition emerges as details emerge regarding AMC’s newly-announced pricing system for its cinemas in the US.
The first few details have emerged regarding the American movie chain AMC’s
new pricing system and unsurprisingly, the value proposition isn’t as stunningly good as all that marketing speak would have us believe. Users online have been checking out the seating plans of the cinema chain’s new ‘sightline’ pricing in the US, where seats are set to be sold at different prices according to the quality of the view.
In a move that was entirely predictable, users are claiming that the new strand of cheaper priced seats is reserved for the very frontmost seats only, whilst the bulk of the auditorium will be getting a price hike. Several high-profile voices have expressed their disdain for the move, including Elijah Wood who took to Twitter to blast AMC in no uncertain terms, stating “the movie theatre is and always has been a sacred democratic space for all”.
Wood wrote that “this new initiative by AMC Theatres would essentially penalise people for lower income and reward for higher income.”
AMC already ruffled a few feathers last year when it priced
The Batman at a premium price point, something we’ve seen cinema chains here in the UK experiment with too. Some degree of sightline pricing is already, of course, in operation in the UK.
