Two Steven Spielberg classics are getting re-releases in the US – and they’re arriving in 3D for the first time as well.
Two of Steven Spielberg’s most enduring films are due to be re released in cinemas this year, courtesy of Amblin Entertainment (Spielberg’s production company), and Universal Pictures. And what’s more, it seems – sort of – that the 3D re-release trend might be back in town, with news that both E.T. and Jaws are – in the US at least – coming back to cinemas on IMAX screens and in 3D.
Some of the most iconic images in the history of cinemas can be found in the two pictures. E.T and the bike flying across the moon, that music signifying the shark, to Robert Shaw’s astonishing monologue about the USS Indianapolis.
Jim Orr, President of Distribution for Universal Pictures, said that “Universal is honored to have been a part of so many extraordinary, unforgettable Steven Spielberg films over the past 47 years, including Jaws in 1975, E.T. in 1982 and Jurassic Park in 1993. No filmmaker, it’s fair to say, has had a greater or more enduring impact on American cinema or has created more indelible cinematic memories for tens of billions of people worldwide. We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the anniversary of E.T. and the first Universal-Spielberg summer blockbuster, Jaws, than to allow audiences to experience these films in a way they’ve never been able to before.
Travis Reid, CEO of ReadD, added that “Jaws redefined what it means to be a summer-event blockbuster and now for the first time ever audiences can experience Steven Spielberg’s motion picture classic in 3D. Everything that made Jaws a sensation and a fan favourite for nearly 50 years will be enhanced in RealD 3D, allowing fans a completely new opportunity to immerse themselves in one of the greatest summer suspense thrillers of all time.”
E.T will be the first to undergo the process, and will be released on 12th August. Then, just when you thought it was safe to go back into cinemas, Jaws will be unleashed on the 2nd September. We await news of UK re-release dates.
