Dune director Denis Villeneuve says that the sequel is meant to shoot at the end of this summer – and will feature more of House Harkonnen.
The greenlit sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster Dune is due to start filming at the end of this summer, Variety reports. The director has said that Dune: Part 2 is “mostly designed” already as he is working with the same cast and crew, something which he is not altogether familiar with as this is his first sequel. He has also revealed that the second part will feature a lot more of the antagonists from House Harkonnen – good news for Dave Bautista and Stellan Skarsgård fans.
Bautista’s relative lack of screen time in the first instalment is entirely down to the process of splitting Frank Herbert’s book into two films. “It’s like a chess game”, Villeneuve explains. “Some new characters will be introduced in the second part and a decision I made very early on was that this first part would be more about Paul Atreides and the Bene Gesserit, and his experience of being in contact for the first time with a different culture. Second part, there will be much more Harkonnen stuff.”
The second part will see many cast members from Dune return, including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Javier Bardem. The script for the blockbuster sequel is already written, so Villeneuve is confident in his ability to pull it off. “The movie will be more challenging, but we know where we are stepping. So I feel confident”, he says. “Frankly, the only big unknown for me right now is the pandemic.”
The first Dune has gained multiple nominations at this years’ prestigious awards ceremonies, including ten Oscar nominations.
