Doug Liman on Edge Of Tomorrow 2: “We keep talking about it”

Doug Liman, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are all said to be keen on a return to Edge Of Tomorrow. We’ve been down this road before though.

It’s a familiar pattern that we’ve seen before, but here we are again. One of the key creatives from 2014’s Edge Of Tomorrow will pop up and claim that they’re very interested in getting a sequel off the ground. A decade on from the original film’s release, Edge Of Tomorrow has only grown in esteem but despite everybody involved claiming that they are interested, no firm plans seem to exist.

It was back in 2020 that Emily Blunt – the original film’s co-star – announced that the script was written and “that [it] is really promising and really, really cool”. However, scheduling the availability of Blunt, director Doug Liman and the film’s star co-Tom Cruise seemed to be the problem, with all three of them being rather busy people.

Presumably then, Warner Bros would be keen to back the project which would somehow continue the story of Cruise’s ‘soldier reliving the same day over and over as he tries to prevent an alien invasion from wiping out humanity.’

Even though the original film was a decent success at the box office (earning $370m from a $180m budget), it was its home release – where the film was retitled as Live Die Repeat – where the film really came into its own, transforming into a success that would surely have the studio keen for another tilt with Liman, Cruise and Blunt all on board.

Given that Warner Bros now has a production deal in place with Cruise, you’d think that things might have progressed a little further but if that’s the case, we’re none the wiser. Cruise’s next two films already seem to be queued up and neither of them are an Edge Of Tomorrow sequel.

Still, we’re holding out hope and according to Liman, the appetite is still there. The filmmaker is out and about promoting his new movie, The Instigators ,and he revealed to Empire that both he and Cruise rewatched the film recently and are still chatting about a sequel.

“We keep talking about it,” revealed Liman. “We love that world. Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in ten years. I was like ‘wow, that is a really good movie.’”

He’s not wrong. Of course, Liman and Cruise have their own mini-queue of movies to make, including an Edge Of Tomorrow sequel and a film set – and actually shot – in space. But Cruise’s slate as of right now looks to be pretty busy for the time being given that he has another Mission: Impossible film to finish and promote before moving onto The Gauntlet for Warner Bros.

After that? A collaboration with The Revenant filmmaker, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Then there’s Top Gun 3 which we imagine Skydance will be keen to press ahead with now that its merger with Paramount has been confirmed.

As it stands, Edge Of Tomorrow may well remain on, well… the edge of tomorrow but you can expect one of the film’s key players to pop up in a year or so and tell us that they really want to make it. Until then, we’ll just keep our fingers crossed.
