Tales Of The TARDIS segments have been added to Doctor Who: Pyramid of Mars, which will be broadcast on BBC4 on Thursday.

One of the biggest treats of Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary celebrations last year was Tales Of The TARDIS. Something that perhaps started off as fan service evolved into a lovely celebration of the history of the show, as newly filmed segments were added to the beginning and the end of classic stories, with actors reprising their roles as various companions, some for the first time onscreen in decades.

We got to see the Vicki and Steven in The Time Meddler, Jamie and Zoe in The Mind Robber, Jo and Sarah Jane Adventures alumni Clyde in The Three Doctors, Fifth Doctor and Tegan in Earthshock, Sixth Doctor and Peri in Vengeance On Varos and Seventh Doctor and Ace in Curse Of Fenric.

Given the ending of The Legend Of Ruby Sunday – you can read our review here – it makes sense that Pyramids of Mars has been chosen for the next episode, to both refresh fans’ memories and introduce new viewers to the terrifying Sutekh, ahead of Saturday’s finale Empire Of Death. The episodes mark the return of original voice actor Gabriel Woolf as Sutekh for the first time onscreen in 49 years – he also voiced The Beast in 2006 two-parter The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit.

The BBC has also released a synopsis, which reads as follows:

TALES OF THE TARDIS: PYRAMIDS OF MARS sees the TARDIS land in 1911. In the grounds of the Old Priory, Egyptian mummies are walking and the Doctor and Sarah find that an ancient and powerful evil is menacing mankind.

And now back on board the Remembered TARDIS, the Doctor and Ruby pause in battle to reflect on their recent adventures – all before they fight to save the universe in this Saturday’s highly anticipated season finale EMPIRE OF DEATH. The finale also sees Gabriel Woolf return as the legendary Sutekh, 48 years after his original role as the villain.

Executive producer Phil Collinson said ā€œRevisiting the rich history of Doctor Who is endlessly thrilling and this is no exception. It’s so exciting to bring back TALES OF THE TARDIS again, and to revisit a classic enemy of the Doctor. Gabriel Woolf as Sutekh, returning to terrify a whole new generation of children in a blistering season finale is what makes this show so special and appeal to so many across the generationsā€.

Tales of the TARDIS: Pyramids of Mars will be broadcast at 8pm on BBC4. The series finale Empire Of Death will be available on iPlayer from midnight on the 22nd June. It will be broadcast the same evening at 6:40pm.
