Potential spoilers ahead, as Russell T Davies has been chatting about one or two story threads from Doctor Who finale, Empire Of Death.
Over the weekend, the final episode of Doctor Who’s latest series – season one, or series 14, take your pick – aired. And whether you saw it in a cinema, on iPlayer, on Disney+ or on BBC One, the episode has got plenty of people chattering.
From this point onwards, we’re doing spoilers.
The end of Empire Of Death – and you can read our spoiler-filled review here – seemed to mark the end of Ruby Sunday’s story, as she bid farewell to the Doctor. Off he went, lonely again, to save the universe. But again, as we and many others noted, there’s little chance that’s the end of her story, with Millie Gibson widely expected back in the show. Russell T Davies, chatting to The Official Doctor Who Podcast, has now confirmed as much.
Looking ahead to the Steven Moffat-penned Christmas special, Joy To The World, Davies confirmed that “we have a Christmas special coming and I absolutely can tell you that Ruby Sunday has not finished her story”.
He added that “Millie Gibson’s coming back. That’s not a spoiler, it’s absolute fact. We’re very excited. Christmas is mad and brilliant and exciting! I can tell you that the story as we go into 2025 of Ruby’s family is not quite at an end”.
This suggests that we’re not just getting her story as part of the Christmas special, but also going into the season of the show that broadcasts next year as well.
Davies is in full on promo mode too, promising that “there’s more revelations to come. But why was Mrs Flood [Anita Dobson] standing on a rooftop making those pronouncements? All I can say is, you are literally in for the ride of a lifetime”.
Doctor Who season 2/series 15 has actually already wrapped filming too, and we’ll bring you more news on it as we hear it.
