A new Doctor Who documentary will explore Paul McGann’s brief onscreen stint as The Doctor in the 1996 TV Movie.
Hot on the heels of the 1960s Dr Who films extremely successful stint in cinemas last month, another Doctor Who project is heading to the big screen.
Doctor Who Am I will take a deep dive into the making of the 1996 TV movie. Matthew Jacobs, who wrote the script for the film, will assess the film’s place in the context of the time, where there was no new Who on the horizon. The film brought hope to Whovians that there was a future for the series.
Directed by Geoffrey Sax, the TV Movie saw Paul McGann take over from Sylvester McCoy in a story that took the TARDIS to San Francisco on New Year’s Eve 1999. There, he must stop his arch nemesis The Master from stealing his remaining regenerations. Daphne Ashbrook and Eric Roberts co-starred in the film, and both will appear in the documentary along with McGann. The official longline describes Doctor Who Am I as “a funny and emotionally perilous documentary, packed full of Doctor Who whimsy and celebrating a passionate, united fanbase”. Jacobs also co-directs the film alongside Vanessa Yuille, the latter making her directorial debut. Doctor Who Am I will be released via Kaleidoscope in the UK on an as yet unspecified date in October. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more. Variety — Thank you for visiting!
