The ongoing legal spat between Disney and Scarlett Johansson has allegedly stalled a filmmaking return to the MCU for the Avengers: Endgame directors.
Disney’s legal battle with Scarlett Johansson over an alleged breach of contract continues to damage the company. The company made the mystifying decision to allow the details of the case to go public, and since then, its reputation has suffered after it made negative public comments of one of its most popular stars.
The matter is focused on Johansson’s contract for the film Black Widow, which she claims Disney reneged on when it elected to give the film a dual release, both in cinemas and on Disney+. This in turn negatively affected the actor’s backend deal for the film, and Johansson is therefore taking Disney to court for what she alleges is breach of contract.
With the matter seemingly set for court, the fallout continues for Disney who is apparently suffering indirectly from the lawsuit too.
It is being reported that the Russo Brothers, the directors of some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular films, have cooled on the idea of a filmmaking return to the MCU. The reason? Because they’re concerned that Disney’s shifting release strategies could hurt their own backend compensation in the same way that Johansson claims she lost significant earnings.
What a new Russo Marvel film might be is a tantalising prospect, it thus doesn’t look very close. Furthermore, it seems that the lawsuit with Johansson continues to do significant damage to Disney’s reputation, and its ‘hardline’ approach to the disagreement with the actor is looking increasingly questionable.
