Disney is making a live-action adaptation of its 1970 animated film, The Aristocats – it is currently in early development.
Peter Rabbit director Will Gluck is set to helm a live-action adaptation of Disney’s
The Aristocats, Variety reports. The 1970 animated film follows a family of well-off cats living in Paris. When the butler discovers the pets will inherit their owner’s fortune, he kidnaps them and abandons them in the countryside. The pampered cats must learn to survive on their own, and get home before their inheritance is stolen.
Aside from both
Peter Rabbit films, Will Gluck has also directed 2014’s
Annie, Friends With Benefits, and
Easy A. He will produce the live-action
Aristocats via his production company, Olive Bridge Entertainment. Joining him to work on the screenplay will be Keith Bunin, writer of Pixar’s
Onward.
The original
Aristocats was a big success in 1970, grossing $191 million at the worldwide box office on a $4 million budget. It also cemented its place in popular culture with catchy song ‘Ev’rybody Wants To Be A Cat’.
This new film will join Disney’s other live-action remakes of its’ animal-centric films – including
The Lion King, Jungle Book and
Lady And The Tramp. These have been largely successful, receiving praise for their visual effects especially, but some have been criticised for being too like the original and lacking creativity. Current reports are calling
The Aristocats an adaptation, rather than a remake, so perhaps it will have a bit more originality than its predecessors.
