A sequel to the live action take on Aladdin is set to be added to Disney’s slate.
It’s been a year of huge hits for Disney, not least with its strategy of making new takes on some of its animated favourites. Dumbo may not have hit the heights the studio was hoping for, but The Lion King’s haul is now over $1.3bn worldwide. And Aladdin too crossed the $1bn mark.
The latter was directed by Guy Ritchie, and such has been its success that there’s now talk of an Aladdin 2. Producer Dan Lin confirmed the news in an interview with CBR, where he said that “I would say resoundingly audiences want to see more”.
He added that “they’ve watched this movie multiple times. We have lots of fan letters about people who really go back and they bring their friends and bring their family. And so we feel like there’s more story to tell”.
Whilst he didn’t confirm outright a sequel, he may as well have done, saying that “without giving away too much, we are certainly exploring where we can go with this franchise”.
It’s unclear yet whether Guy Ritchie would return to direct.
When Disney hit big with the original animated Aladdin of course, it kickstarted its not very good line of hugely successful straight to video sequels with The Return Of Jarar. Don’t expect the studio to follow such a cheap path with whatever the new Aladdin 2 turns out to be…
