Disney doesn’t mention X-Men: The New Mutants by name, but confirms it’s exploring the release options for its slate of movies.
A day or two back, a listing popped up out of the blue for
X-Men: The New Mutants as a video on demand preorder. This led to speculation that the long-delayed film was now set to skip cinemas altogether, even though no official announcement has thus far been made about the film’s new release plans.
Now,
in its regular earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Chapek has confirmed that the firm very much believes in cinemas and “the value of the theatrical experience”, but that “we’re going to evaluate each of our movies as a case-by-case situation, as we are doing during this coronavirus situation.”.
He cited as part of that evaluation the decision to send
Artemis Fowl direct to the Disney+ streaming service next month, after abandoning its theatrical release. And in doing so, he’s opened the door for other movies to follow a similar path away from the big screen.
X-Men: The New Mutants wasn’t mentioned by name, but the film
remains available to preorder here (although with no release date listed as of yet).
We await further announcements with interest.
