With several territories still to launch into, Disney+ records huge numbers, less than six months after its release.
Two weeks after it launched in lots of new territories around the world, it’s now been revealed that Disney+ has smashed through the 50 million subscriber barrier. It did so off the back of the service now being available in the UK, other parts of Europe and India. India, it’s revealed, accounts for 8 million of the sign-ups thus far already.
There’s a lot of ceiling room too, with Disney+ still set to be rolled out in lots of places around the world. And as Kevin Mayer, the chairman of direct-to-consumer and international at Disney has commented, “”e’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year”.
He added that “great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+”.
In the six months since it’s launched, Disney+ now stands at a subscriber level that’s just under a third that of Netflix’s already. And with its aggressive promotion and pricing, don’t be surprised if it gets a lot closer to that number by the end of the year.
