Disney and Sony come to a financial split agreement for the new Spider-Man, and director Jon Watts is now set to return too.
Just before the weekend, the divide between Disney and Sony over the screen rights for Spider-Man was bridged. That a deal was inked that sees the pair partnering on a third Spider-Man film, whilst allowing the character to remain a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe too.
The news went down really rather well, and a few further details have now come to light about what was going on behind the scenes.
Deadline reports for a start that director Jon Watts is now set to return for the third movie. That his contract was up following the summer hit Spider-Man: Far From Home, but he’s now negotiating to direct the next film.
Furthermore, it looks as though Disney will stump up a quarter of the budget for the new film, and take a similar slice of the profits. The next Spider-Man outing – that will see Tom Holland in the title role again – lands on July 16th 2021.
Finally, the suggestion is too that Sony’s separate Spider-Man spin-off universe will now at the least be referenced in the MCU as well.
From the outside looking in, Sony’s decision to play hardball over all of this looks to have paid off really rather handsomely…
