Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verseās planned sequel has officially found its three directors ā more details here.
Released in 2018, the animated feature,
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a smash success, not only proving that Sony could still make a great Spider-Man movie (following the mixed receptions to the Andrew Garfield films,) but also winning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. If you ask this writer, it is without doubt the best Spidey film ever made, and thatās saying something.
Sony soon got to work on a sequel but weāve known pretty much from the outset that whilst the filmās original production team are all returning, the directors, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, wouldnāt be. As of today though, the project has officially landed its new helmers (although theyāve reportedly been working on the project for some time).
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K Thompson are set to direct the sequel, which as yet, has no planned release date.
Dos Santos has experience directing and storyboarding a number of animated projects including
The Legend of Korra and
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Nickelodeon),
Voltron: Legendary Defender (DreamWorks Animation),
Justice League Unlimited and
Teen Titans (Warner Bros).
Powers co-wrote and co-directed Pixarās
Soul and recently wrote Regina Kingās debut film as director,
One Night In Miami, which was also based on his stage play.
Finally, Thompson was the production designer on the first
Spider-Verse film, as well as on
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.
Thereās certainly some pedigree there, especially when you combine it with the production team who worked on the film, including Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg.
Peter Ramsey, one of the first filmās directors is executive producing.
Weāre certainly looking forwards to more news on this one and will bring you more as we hear it.
