New figures have shown that many of us having been buying lots of films in the UK during lockdown, with the decline in physical media sales halted.
The British Association For Screen Entertainment – BASE to its mates – is an organisation that represents the businesses involved in selling us movies and TV shows to watch at home. That covers digital video releases and physical media too, and it’s released some new figures that suggest – perhaps unsurprisingly – that many of us have been turning to digital and physical media during lockdown.
BASE now reports that digital video sales outnumber physical units for the first time, with a 51% to 49% split. And during lockdown, there’s been an 87% increase in sales of digital films being bought (thus, not the likes of Netflix and its kin).
Furthermore, it noted that prior to lockdown, sales of physical discs had been in decline – as they had been for years – but it now reports that disc sales “proved to be remarkably resilient”. In particular, Blu-ray and Ultra HD 4K Blu-rays are holding up too.
The full press announcement is here, and if you can overlook the fact that it describes films and TV shows as ‘content’, it makes for positive reading.
