Deadpool 3 is officially Deadpool & Wolverine, as a first trailer emerges for Ryan Reynoldsā MCU-shuffling superhero film. Have a gander if you havenāt seen it yet:
Remember when Argylle director Matthew Vaughn described the upcoming Deadpool movie as āThe jolt [thatās] about to save the whole Marvel universeā?
The first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine ā for thatās now Deadpool 3ā²s official title ā gives us a better idea of what heās on about. Because, in its two-and-a-bit minutes duration, Ryan Reynoldsā Merc with a Mouth even describes himself as āMarvel Jesusā ā a typically meta nod to the critical and financial wobbles the MCU has had of late.
The Deadpool and X-Men movies were once put out by 20th Century Fox, of course, and itās thanks to Disneyās multi-million dollar acquisition of the studio that both Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackmanās Wolverine can now stomp about in the MCU. Again, the trailer makes no secret of this ā one slow-motion shot in a snowy landscape shows the old 20th Century Fox logo sticking up out of the ground.
Itās fascinating to think, really, that it was in July 2014 that some test footage featuring the voice of Ryan Reynolds first emerged on the internet. Director Tim Miller had first created the clip ā a comedic, violent action scene featuring Deadpool ā a few years earlier, with the hope that Fox would give the greenlight to a feature film. Nervous about all the swearing and gore in a superhero flick, Foxās executives passed.
When that test footage leaked onto the web three years later, however, the enthusiasm online ultimately prompted Fox to relent, and what became the Deadpool franchise was born.
A decade on, and Deadpool & Wolverine is Marvelās lone cinema release for 2024, and as weāve already seen, is now being billed ā both in the trailer and outside it ā as the film that turns the MCUās fortunes around. Funny how things turn out, isnāt it?
Deadpool 3 is out in UK cinemas on the 26th July 2024.
