The ongoing actors’ strike means that Deadpool 3 isn’t going to be finished in time for a summer 2024 release.
One of 2024’s biggest blockbusters is about to get pushed from its summer release date according to Deadline. Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 has been the subject of much chatter of late, with a delay looking increasingly likely as the actors’ strike continues without resolution. The film was halfway through shooting when the strike forced it into shutdown. According to lots of outlets today, a solution to the actors’ strike may be on the way too, courtesy of… the actors themselves, with a host of A-listers reportedly offering to pitch in to cover the shortfall in costs that are proving to be a stumbling block in negotiations between the actors’ guild and the alliance of studios. However, sources are suggesting that even if a deal can be done pronto, it’s still too late for a production of Deadpool 3's scale to grind back into motion and hit that previously-announced May 2024 release date. This spells bad news for Marvel Studios as it desperately looks to find some momentum following a tricky year. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did well commercially and critically but Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania didn’t, and what’s more, there are already plenty of sites popping up early numbers ahead of The Marvels’ November release, claiming that the film is set to open to half the box office haul of its predecessor. (We’re not sure that seems like a fair comparison, but that’s an argument for another article.) Worse still, the news will be even more painful for cinemas who will now be looking at a 2024 slate that could begin to domino if the strike isn’t resolved soon. Deadpool 3 will likely still release at some point later next year, but it’s the summer blockbuster period that cinema operators will be eyeing nervously in the hope that other tentpole films can quickly get back up and running and hold the line.
