The Wonder Twins film is scrapped, signalling a change in direction for DC superhero movies in the wake of the Warner Bros/Discovery merger.
When the
Wonder Twins movie was announced just a few months ago, it seemed like an odd choice for a movie adaptation. One of the least likely superhero properties we’d imagine to be green-lit,
Wonder Twins follows a pair of shape-shifting alien siblings who featured on the incredibly kitsch 1970s DC animated show
The All-New Super Friends Hour. In the wake of Warner Brosā merger with Discovery however, the project has fallen out of favour.
Adam Sztykiel, the writer of the upcoming
Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson
, had been announced as the writer and director for this project and the idea was for this one to go to HBO Max in the US. Whilst the Wonder Twins characters have been used in a more serious manner in the intervening decades, including reappearances in the comics and showing up briefly in
Smallville, their questionable profile was too much of an issue now that their parent company has reportedly decided to veer away from releasing superhero films straight to HBO Max.
For other DC Comics films that were originally planned for a small screen release such as
Blue Beetle and
Batgirl, that means theyāll be getting the full theatrical treatment, which will be pleasing for fans. However, in the case of
Wonder Twins, it was decided that the characters were simply too ānicheā to merit a cinematic release. The project has officially been cancelled and for now at least, that seems to have bought this rather strange venture to a premature conclusion.
