Mother Mary will see director David Lowery return to the studio that partnered with him on A Ghost Story and The Green Knight.
When the trailer launched a couple of weeks ago for David Lowery’s next film, Peter Pan And Wendy, we mentioned how the filmmaker has become very proficient at making crowd-pleasing films with broad appeal for studios, whilst also finding space to craft arthouse pictures. Lowery’s resume includes films like Pete’s Dragon and the upcoming live action Peter Pan And Wendy for Disney+ whilst also boasting more ambient and esoteric fare like A Ghost Story or The Green Knight.
The filmmaker certainly seems to have found the rhythm of making studio films that then allow him to pursue his smaller passion projects. If the upcoming Peter Pan & Wendy was Lowery making ‘one for them’ then his next project certainly appears to be ‘one for him’. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lowery’s next film will see him reunite with A24, the studio he collaborated with to realise 2017’s A Ghost Story and 2021’s The Green Knight.
Mother Mary is described as a ‘pop epic’ with the story ‘following a fictional musician and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer.” Lead casting has been announced for the project with Anne Hathaway set to star as the musician whilst the highly-rated star of Netflix’s I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel, is set to feature opposite Hathaway as the fashion designer.
Given that music is going to be a key element of the film, there’s some heavyweight talent lined up in that area too. The Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff, who has co-written some of Taylor Swift’s biggest hits, is on board, as is Charli XCX. Both will ‘write and produce original songs for the project.’ As for the original score, that will be composed by Lowery’s regular collaborator, Daniel Hart.
There’s lots to be excited about here, especially given the quality of Lowery’s collaborators and the freedom that he will get working under the A24 banner to realise something that feels unique. Both The Green Knight and A Ghost Story remain memorable as films that are steeped in texture and atmosphere and we’re looking forwards to losing ourself in Lowery’s take on pop melodrama.
