David Fincher is returning to a genre that he knows well, with Michael Fassbender reportedly in talks to star in The Killer.
David Fincher is one of the most adept directors out there when it comes to taking audiences into the minds of killers. Be it Seven, Zodiac or the Netflix series Mindhunter which he produced, some of the filmmaker’s most memorable work stems from exploring the dark motivations of people who choose to take the lives of others.
It’s a topic Fincher is set to explore once more, as part of his ongoing deal with Netflix. This time he’s looking to make The Killer, a noir-themed tale about an assassin who begins to suffer from a crisis of conscience.
The story is based on the series of graphic novels by Alexis Nolent. What’s more, Fincher will be re-teaming with his Seven scribe, Andrew Kevin Walker, in news that will make fans of the 1995 crime thriller very happy indeed.
Reports are also surfacing that Michael Fassbender has been approached to take on the title role although this is as yet unconfirmed.
Fincher’s long-standing relationship with Netflix continues to yield fruit, with the current exclusivity agreement he has signed with the streaming platform seeming to suit both parties. This is especially true following the warm reception to Mank, a project that would have been deemed too risky by most studios given its black and white presentation and focus on an ‘inside Hollywood’ story.
We’ll bring you more news on The Killer as we hear it. Hopefully, with awards season soon to be out of the way, Fincher will be directing all of his energies into this project and we won’t have to wait years to see it.
