The Prey director Dan Trachtenberg has been discussing the potential future of the Predator series.
We’ve known for a while that the next film in the Predator series has been on the way, with filming taking place in the Calgary wilderness last summer. We also know the film is taking a back-to-basics approach to summon the survivalist slasher spirit of the beloved 1987 original. Entitled Prey, the plot is set three centuries ago and looking to follow ‘a character named Kee and her younger brother Taabe. Kee is described as a tomboy, who fights against gender norms to prove that she can be just as strong as any male Comanche warrior.’
Prey will land on Disney+ on August 5th, with the film originally slated to be a surprise release, until it leaked that the project was actually a Predator movie. Not a lot else is known about director Dan Trachtenberg’s reimagining of the franchise at the moment apart from the exciting reveal that this will be a stripped-back return to the series’ action roots. It certainly feels like a creatively-exciting step for the franchise, and one that Trachtenberg believes can lead to more Predator films, as long as the series continues to take risks.
“There are a lot of exciting ideas for what could be next for the franchise,” explains Trachtenberg. “The things that most excite me as the boldest swings and I think there’s scope to do other things that haven’t been done before.”
It’s certainly true that the last couple of films in the series have been too beholden to the 1987 original, whilst failing to capture its spirit. 2018’s The Predator played for as much nostalgia as it could leverage from the opening credit sequence alone, but Trachtenberg is adamant that it’s the spirit of the Schwarzenegger classic that needs to be captured, whilst making bold moves to not simply rehash or revisit its story.
In this sense, he thinks Prey has struck the right tone, adding “there’s not a lot of dialogue in the movie – it’s largely told through action.”
We’re certainly looking forward to seeing how this one plays out and with only a month to go before the film’s release, we’ll soon be able to find out.
