Curt Clendenin, who was rumoured to have shot a sequence as the Silver Surfer for Avengers: Infinity War, has been chatting Marvel.
The Silver Surfer is undoubtedly one of the coolest characters on Marvelās roster and ripe for an MCU-style reimagining following his rather humdrum appearance in Foxās 2007 sequel,
Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. Rumours persisted before the release of 2018ās
Avengers: Infinity War that the Silver Surfer character would make a brief appearance, but it was not to be.
Now, Curt Clendenin, whose name was mentioned at the time in connection with the role, has been chatting about his involvement with Marvel. Whilst his comments are naturally as cagey as one might expect when heās probably signed more NDAs than you and I have had hot dinners, you can still draw some interesting conclusions by reading between the lines:
āGeez. I⦠Iām not really allowed to say too much about what any of itās⦠You know, thereās a lot. I donāt know if youāve seen, like the⦠[Endgame directors] the Russo brothers are good at⦠how do I put it? Theyāre good at
leaving Easter Eggs too, and they like to have fun with things, you know?ā
āIām just not; I canāt⦠I canāt really say. Itās like, you know how George Lucas treats his sets? You go into an audition for a movie called Blue Mountain. And it turns out, heās like, āno, surprise, itās
Star Wars.ā So, I have to leave some secrecy. I donāt know how else to explain it, but time, ideally, will tell. Thereās a lot of stuff thatās not shown, and weāve heard of all these new Marvel shows that are coming out, and weāve heard about, letās say, certain side projects that directors may or may not have been rumoured to work on. And so..ā.
So whilst not fully confirming that the Silver Surfer was set to make an appearance in
Infinity War, Clendenin infers, via the George Lucas reference, that perhaps he went in to play one role and found out he was playing perhaps, a far more significant character.
Why Marvel Studios elected not to use the rumoured cameo remains a secret for now, but from a narrative perspective, it makes sense. The Silver Surferās origin story is inextricably linked to the character of Galactus, the Eater of Worlds, an antagonist on the same scale as Thanos, the Mad Titan. Introducing that plot thread during
Infinity War could have drawn focus from where the filmmakers wanted it to be: the showdown with Thanos and the culmination of a narrative arc spanning over 20 films.
Still, itās an interesting nugget, if nothing else and maybe one day the footage will pop up somewhere. With a new MCU version of the
Fantastic Four on the way, itās surely only a matter of time before we get another big screen take on the Silver Surfer.
