The sequel to Crazy Rich Asians finally starts moving again, following fallout over the pay disparity between the writers of the original movie.
Off the back of the success of the 2018 hit romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians – a film that it’s filmmakers resisted a higher offer from Netflix to go for a theatrical release with Warner Bros – the plan was quickly announced for two more movies.
The first film starred Constance Wu and Henry Golding, was directed by Jon M Chu, and penned by Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. All seemed quite straightforward when pursuing the follow-up.
But Crazy Rich Asians 2 hit the headlines a year after the release of the original movie when Adele Lim quit. She’s discovered that Chiarelli’s pay packet for penning the two sequels was nearly ten times higher than hers. With the backing of Jon M Chu, she quit and the news went public. Attempts to try and resolve the situation came to nothing, and Lim has reportedly declined the opportunity to return. Hard to blame her, really.
Only now, several years later, is the project moving forward again, This time, Amy Wang has been hired to pen the first follow-up to the original movie, presumably for an appropriate pay cheque. She’s been working on shows such as Brothers Sun, Blindspotting and The Birch, and is writing and directing her own horror film for Paramount.
No word yet on when the film will be ready to go before cameras. Do expect the ensemble, which also includes Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Michelle Yeoh and Lisa Lu, to return.
