The Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise is being resurrected, with the writer behind Chernobyl and The Last of Us heavily involved.
We’ve heard talk of another film in the
Pirates Of The Caribbean series for some time now. Series producer, Jerry Bruckheimer has
said it will happen whilst at one point, Margot Robbie was
also involved in one version whilst writer Craig Mazin was developing another separate take.
Last we heard, Bruckheimer was saying that he still wanted to make both films, but indicated that the one being co-developed by Mazin was closer to getting a greenlight. Now, Craig Mazin himself has popped up to confirm that this is indeed the case, and that he and long-time
Pirates Of The Caribbean scribe, Ted Elliot have been tasked with writing the script.
Talking to the
Los Angeles Times, the writer behind
Chernobyl and
The Last Of Us said “we pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he [Elliot] wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened, and everyone’s waiting around.”
This version is the one that Bruckheimer has previously indicated as having a ‘much younger cast’ so perhaps it’s some kind of reboot operating on a smaller budget by not having to shell out loads of cash by bringing in established series regulars. There’s often conversations about blockbuster films costing so much that it makes profitability much more difficult, and Disney especially have been part of that conversation. If a lower price tag means the studio is willing to take a risk on a
Pirates take that is ‘too weird’ then should it be successful, perhaps we’ll see more approaches like this.
Mazin also revealed that his first draft for season two of
The Last Of Us was submitted before the strike kicked in and he’s writing the redraft ‘in his head’ so he can get going as soon as the writers and studios come to terms. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
