Barker had served termination rights under America’s 1976 Copyright Act, that allows an author to get their rights back from a publisher after a prolonged period of time. He served notice that he was intending to do so, although this didn’t go down so well with a man called Larry Kuppin.
Kuppin had bought the company that released the original film, and according to
The Hollywood Reporter, “told Barker in correspondence that he couldnāt terminate because the terms of the original movie contract were to be construed under U.K. contract law”.
However, it’s now been reported that Barker and Kuppin have reached a deal, and that means that Barker will reclaim the American rights to
Hellraiser as of December 19
th 2021. It’s unclear at this stage who retains the rights to the film elsewhere in the world.
More as we hear it. In the meantime, two of the more recent Hellraiser movies – Hellraiser Revelations and Hellraiser Judgement – are heading to Blu-ray release in the UK next March. More details on the
first here, and on the
second here.
