It was the first chain to shut its doors, but Cineworld will be throwing them all back open in the middle of May it confirms.
You may well recall that come the end of last year, when a further delay to James Bond film No Time To Die was announced, the Cineworld chain – including its Picturehouse sites – pretty much immediately decided to shut the doors of its cinemas until 2021. And it looks like they’ll have been closed for around six months by the time they open again.
For Cineworld has confirmed that it’ll be reopening the cinemas it owns in the US in April, followed by its UK sites in May as lockdown restrictions are lifted. Furthermore, it has also done a deal with Warner Bros to ensure a short cinema-exclusive windows for movies.
This runs contra to what Warner Bros is doing this year, where it’s been sending its big releases to its US HBO Max streaming service day and date with a cinema release. Next year, there will be a theatrical window of at least 31 days for its films, extended to 45 for certain movies.
May 17th is the day when indoor cinemas around the UK are currently set to reopen their doors. Fingers crossed that opens, but also, that circumstances allow them to stay open this time too (Cineworld inevitably and rightly caveats its announcement as being in line with government guidance).
