Following the incredible success of 2023’s Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is sticking with Universal for his 2026 project.
When Christopher Nolan left Warner Bros back in 2020 after a very public disagreement with the studio, it marked the end of a successful partnership that spanned two decades, beginning with 2002’s Insomnia.
Nolan’s sudden status as a free agent saw lots of studios attempt to lure the filmmaker to their banner. Universal that ultimately triumphed by offering the filmmaker the guarantee of theatrical releases alongside some handsome benefits.
That was in 2021, and the deal has worked out splendidly for both parties. Oppenheimer made just shy of a billion dollars at the global box office, as well as scooping up lots and lots of awards (including Oscars aplenty). It’s no surprise, then, that Nolan has elected to make Universal his home for his next, untitled project.
According to Deadline, Matt Damon is in talks to star in Nolan’s next feature, marking yet another collaboration between the pair following Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Production is slated to begin early next year with a 17th July 2026 theatrical and IMAX release date already locked in.

That date is Nolan’s is in his usual release window, but beyond that we know very little. Some are speculating that the project could be the filmmaker’s take on the British 1960s mystery-thriller TV series The Prisoner, but we’re going to have to wait for a little longer to find out.
We can expect plenty more A-list talent to join up in the coming months and perhaps some more familiar faces from the director’s filmography will be joining. Nolan has indicated in the past that his next project won’t be quite as ‘bleak’ as Oppenheimer, so there’s that too.
