The Centre for the Moving Image, the charity behind Edinburgh International Film Festival and Filmhouse cinemas has gone into administration.
More sad news for cinema, unfortunately, as charity The Centre for the Moving Image goes into administration. As a result, the Edinburgh International Film Festival and Filmhouse cinemas, which owns sites in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, have ceased trading.
The charity has cited a mixture of reduced audiences from the pandemic, as well as the cost of living crisis and increased energy bills as the reason for its financial collapse.
Even worse, 102 workers have been made redundant, effective immediately.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has expressed concern about the charity’s situation, and has pledged to look into any support the Scottish Government may be able to provide.
This is incredibly sad news which brings into question the future of film and the arts in Scotland – especially regarding Edinburgh International Film Festival, which is the world’s oldest continually-running festival. It’s a shame to see it enter a period of such uncertainty. However, the Centre for the Moving Image has said they’re hoping to attract buyers to purchase the EIFF brand and trademark.
