Julius Onah has reportedly been replaced as the director of Captain America: Brave New World. More on the story below.
Captain America: Brave New World is only a few months away, but the stories about its troubled production keep on coming. Last year, Marvel hired a new writer, and in June 2024 came the reports that the studio was spending $100m on reshoots.
World Of Reel now reports that director Julius Onah has – allegedly – been replaced for those reshoots.
The outlet’s source says the director was “in over his head” and is no longer “calling the shots”. Onah will still retain his directing credit, however, and according to the report, the Luce director is being “a good sport” about the whole thing.
Reshoots are said to be still ongoing and scheduled to last until the end of November. The budget has ballooned considerably as a result, and the film now faces a tough challenge to make its money back.
There’s a lot riding on the new Captain America. Brave New World marks the first entry that doesn’t feature Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, with Anthony Mackie’s Falcon taking up the mantle instead. Outside of the Black Panther franchise, superheroes of colour are still far and few between in the MCU, but Brave New World could prove to be a game changer.
Marvel is also hoping to keep up its momentum after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine with Thunderbolts* and Brave New World, but we’ll just have to wait and see whether the two superhero romps can live up to the high expectations of both Marvel and audiences.
As World Of Reel mentions, Brave New World has received poor feedback from test screenings thus far. The latest trailer looks impressive, though, so there’s every possibility that Marvel has turned out another quality blockbuster.
