Bryce Dallas Howard is set to bring Flight Of The Navigator back to the big screen, with a female protagonist in the cockpit this time.
Bryce Dallas Howard has been cutting her teeth in the director’s chair on episodes of
The Mandalorian and the upcoming
Book Of Boba Fett, both for Disney+. Higher ups at the company have clearly been impressed with what they’ve seen as Howard has been given the opportunity to helm the remake of the classic 1980s science fiction tale,
The Flight of the Navigator.
The original 1986 film was one of those unmistakable 1980s movies that put a young boy at the centre of a fantastical power fantasy, such as
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (a young boy befriends a weird but powerful alien) or
Mac & Me (a young boy befriends a
really weird but powerful alien). In the case of
The Flight Of The Navigator, a young boy befriends an alien spaceship and embarks on a rip-roaring adventure.
The film has been in development since 2017 at Disney, but with Howard now attached as a director, we imagine things will finally move forward and we’d expect to hear casting and production details in due course.
Whether the film seeks to recreate the original’s light tone is as yet unknown, but we can at least imagine that it won’t be as subversive as the version that Neil Blomkamp was teasing back in 2017 when he hinted that he was circling the project. One thing we do know is that the new version of the film will have a female lead, but other than that, fresh details are scarce. More as we hear it…
