After months of talking up the prospects of a sequel, Dwayne Johnson has announced that plans have changed at DC Studios for Black Adam 2.
Contains a spoiler for
Black Adam
Whether youāre a fan of their movies or not, the story unfolding over at DC Studios continues to be a fascinating one.
Over the last couple of years, Dwayne Johnson has staked quite the claim over the DC Universe, using his stardom and huge fan following to influence the future direction of the DCU. Amidst a crowded field of major players such as James Gunn, Walter Hamada and JJ Abrams, Johnson has made quite a few power moves, including briefly bringing back Henry Cavillās Superman and using his social media accounts to create a narrative about
Black Adam's success that is markedly different to the one that most of the Hollywood trades were putting out.
Still, when James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of the newly-minted DC Studios, Johnsonās influence was always in danger of taking a hit and despite his posts to the contrary, it looks like
Black Adam is the latest casualty of the new leadership at the studio.
After spending months playing up the future of the character, Johnson has now taken to social media to announce that plans for a sequel āhave been haltedā.
In his wordsā¦
“My passionate friends, I wanted to give you a long-awaited Black Adam update regarding the character’s future in the new DC Universe. James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling.
However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilised in future DC multiverse chapters. James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for each other to succeed.
It’s no different now, and I will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG. You guys know me, and I have very thick skin – and you can always count on me to be direct with my words.”
The announcement comes in the wake of other news, including the recasting of Henry Cavillās Superman and the cancellation of Patty Jenkinsā
Wonder Woman 3, although whether Gal Gadot will remain in the role of Wonder Woman is yet to be announced.
We expect to hear more concrete plans early in the new year, but these emerging stories continue to offer interesting details as to where the DCU is now headed. But you can clearly cross
Black Adam 2 off the list.
